When we go from Palestine to Syria, we enter a new world, very different from the one we just traveled through: everything changes at once, both the nature and the people, and the present and the past, and the reflections that our modern institutions give rise to, and the memories that history awakens in our spirit. Besides, I would be sorry that we misunderstand ourselves on that which I had wanted to do in writing the pages which follow. I am not a pilgrim or a scholar; I have not previously traveled through Palestine either as a believer or an archaeologist. It's out of sincerity that I make this double confession. If someone asked of this volume questions of edification or scientific research on a country so fertile in pious legends and objects of study, they would risk being disappointed. I am a simple traveler, strongly imbued with the ideas of my time and mediocrely provided with special knowledge, but incapable, like everyone else, of staying unaffected by the spectacle of the grand scenes of nature, as well as the view of places where events which exercised a decisive influence on humanity took place. Au reste, je serais désolé qu'on se méprît sur ce que j'ai voulu faire en écrivant les pages qui vont suivre. Je ne suis ni un pèlerin ni un érudit ; je n'ai parcouru la Palestine ni en croyant ni en archéologue. C'est par pure bonne foi que je fais ce double aveu. Si l'on demandait à ce volume des sujets d'édification ou des recherches scientifiques sur un pays si fécond en pieuses légendes et en objets d'études, on risquerait fort d'être désagréablement déçu. Je suis un simple voyageur, fortement imprégné des idées et des mœurs de mon temps et médiocrement pourvu de connaissances spéciales, mais incapable, comme tout le monde, de rester insensible au spectacle des grandes scènes de la nature, ainsi qu'à la vue des contrées où se sont déroulés des événements qui ont exercé sur l'humanité une influence décisive.
