One must only see the moving reflections of nature that the traveler must be careful not to change after the fact, if he wants to be sincere, if he wants to give an exact and complete image of the effect that the countries he visited had on him. I hope then that the people who read this travel in Palestine will seek in it only what I wanted to put there, and won't even seriously consider what I have put in it. I would be happy if it shared with them some of the impressions I experienced while traveling through the blessed country, the truly holy land where the moral ideal of the Gospel first shone. I know how incomplete and artificial this ideal is, how much has disappeared in practice, everything that is today irredeemably condemned. It often happens to me, when I seek to revive in me the exquisite emotion which I experienced along the banks of Lake Tiberias, reading the Sermon on the Mount, to ask myself if I was not mistaken, if my imagination didn't lead me astray, and to tell myself that Christianity, born of the decline of the ancient world and the great races of history, was only the religion of the barbarians and of the Middle Ages. Il faut y voir uniquement des reflets mobiles de la nature que le voyageur doit bien se garder de retoucher après coup, s'il veut être sincère, s'il veut donner une image exacte et complète de l'effet que lui ont produit les pays qu'il a visités. J'espère donc que les personnes qui liront ce voyage en Palestine n'y chercheront que ce que j'ai voulu y mettre, et qu'elles ne jugeront même pas trop sérieusement ce que j'y ai mis. Je serais heureux s'il leur faisait partager quelques-unes des impressions que j'ai éprouvées en parcourant la contrée bénie, la terre réellement sainte où a brillé pour la première fois l'idéal moral de l'Évangile. Je sais tout ce que cet idéal a d'incomplet et de factice, tout ce qui en a disparu dans la pratique, tout ce qui en est aujourd'hui irrémédiablement condamné. Il m'arrive souvent, lorsque je cherche à faire renaître en moi l'émotion exquise que j'ai éprouvée le long des rives du lac de Tibériade, à la lecture du Sermon sur la Montagne, de me demander si je ne me suis pas trompé, si mon imagination ne m'a pas égaré, et de me dire qu'en somme le christianisme, au déclin du monde antique et des grandes races de l'histoire, n'a été que la religion des barbares et du moyen âge.
